Herati rugs stand out among the various styles of Persian rugs for their distinctive look. Unlike many Persian rugs tied to specific regions, Herati rugs are categorised by their intricate and beautiful designs.

These designs create a clear and recognisable aesthetic, so much so that you can spot a Herati rug from afar. The detailed and flawless craftsmanship of Herati rugs has long been celebrated in the carpet market, and their enduring popularity is evident in how they’ve inspired other Persian rug styles.

Herati Rugs History

The name “Herati” comes directly from the design. This pattern, featuring a single flower with four leaves repeated on a geometric base, originated in the late 15th century in Herat, located in northwestern Afghanistan.

While Herati rugs share some similarities with certain Persian rug styles, like Tabriz and Bidjar rugs, which have incorporated the Herati design, they predate these styles.

Notably, Herati rugs only entered the Western market in the early 19th century, showcasing their longer and more established history than their Persian counterparts.

Materials Used in Herati Rugs

Herati rugs boast a foundation built from a strong combination of cotton and wool threads. This extends to the rug’s pile, crafted entirely from wool. This construction method imbues Herati rugs with exceptional durability and sturdiness. The finished product has a tightly woven feel, providing a smooth surface on top despite the rug’s substantial weight.

Designs and Colours of Herati Rugs

The defining feature of Herati rugs is their captivating design. An intricate artwork meticulously repeated across the entire carpet. At its heart lies a central flower motif, adorned with graceful, curved leaves that sometimes transform into playful fish leaping from the water.

Just like all hand-knotted Persian rugs, each Herati is a one-of-a-kind creation. While the core theme remains consistent, a rich tapestry of colours and geometric patterns unfolds across each rug.

Vibrant yet surprisingly subtle tones breathe life into the design, with popular choices for ivory, blue, red, and golden yellow. The weaving technique utilises symmetrical knots, similar to other Persian rugs. The knot count varies greatly, reflecting the vast history of Herati production.
